Kenneth L. Cavanaugh, Ph.D.

Kenneth L. Cavanaugh, Ph.D. is Professor of Applied Statistics, Department of Business Administration and Senior Research Scientist, Institute of Science, Technology and Public Policy at Maharishi University of Management in Fairfield, Iowa. Dr. Cavanaugh received his undergraduate degree with honours from Yale University, masters degrees from Princeton and Stanford Universities and doctorate from University of Washington. Dr. Chee has been devoted to exploring growth, healing, wellness, consciousness and what gives life meaning. Vincent J. Daczynski is a teacher of the Transcendental Meditation program and the author of For Sales’ Sake Meditate! Alexandria DeVasier

Alexandria DeVasier has been a devout student of Transcendental Meditation since the age of 5. She was born in Nebraska and later moved to Fairfield, Iowa to continue her studies of TM at the Maharishi School of the Age of Enlightenment.As a young woman, DeVasier studied Vedic Science and culture in Italy as a student of the Maharishi University of Management, before becoming involved in one of the largest group meditation studies ever conducted in Washington, DC in 1993.

DeVasier spent 6 weeks of participation in the group practice of the advanced program of Transcendental Meditation and the TM-Sidhi Program including Yogic Flying along with 4000 practitioners and a 27 member independent Project Review Board consisting of sociologists and criminologists from leading universities as well as various members of police departments and government and civic leaders. The purpose of this massive study was to monitor and witness the effects of group practice of the TM Program on preventing violent crime in Washington, DC. Based on the results of the study, the long-term effect associated with a permanent group of 4,000 participants in the Transcendental Meditation and TM-Sidhi programs was calculated as a 48% reduction in homicide, rape and assault crimes in the District of Columbia.

DeVasier later became a nanny and aunt to her 5 year old nephew and married Wally DeVasier, before they both began working together at the Transcendental Meditation Centre in Fairfield, Iowa. Currently they are finishing the construction of two Maharishi Peace Palaces in Fairfield, set to be the homes and flagship centre for TM and 50 plus programs and services for creating permanent peace.

Dr. Joe Dispenza

Dr. Joe Dispenza studied biochemistry at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, N.J. He has a Bachelor’s of Science degree with an emphasis in Neuroscience from Evergreen State College in Olympia, WA. Dr. Masaru Emoto

Masaru Emoto was born in Yokohama in July 1943. He is a graduate of the Yokohama Municipal University's department of humanities and sciences with a focus on International Relations. In 1986 he established the IHM Corporation in Tokyo. In October of 1992 he received certification from the Open International University as a Doctor of Alternative Medicine. Lou Gauthier

After getting a haircut when he was 35, Lou noticed a bald patch on the right side of his head. Assuming that it was caused by the barber, he returned to see him about it. That’s when he found out about alopecia. Shortly after, 2 other patches appeared on the back of his head, followed by another patch on the left side. He also had bald patches in his beard. Lou remembers sitting in the barber’s chair, and seeing the back of his head in the mirror. "I was shocked, but I refused to accept my hair loss condition. I was in denial", he said.A friend suggested that he consult a dermatologist. From 1965 to 1982, Lou received various treatments from five dermatologists, including ultraviolet lamp radiation, cortisone injections on the scalp, and skin-burning lotions. All without results. "My employer was very understanding and allowed me to seek help", he said. By 1982, Lou had lost all the hair on his head, and his right eyebrow.

Lou said, "Although I was doing every thing possible to regrow my hair, I was in denial - I refused to believe that I had lost all my hair. When people mentioned my hair loss condition, I reacted as though I had all my hair. When I looked at people during a conversation, I would notice them looking at my head rather than my eyes. When leaving a theatre one night, I happened to turn and see a lady pointing at me while talking to her partner. That was the first time my baldness really affected me. I felt so alone. The next day, I bought a wig. I thought that would help me regain my self-esteem and self-confidence, but while having lunch at a Montreal restaurant, I noticed the waitresses discussing my new hairpiece. There was no place to hide."

After several UV treatments by Dr. Antranik Benohanian in 1982, the doctor said with a smile: "If you think these treatments are going to help you grow hair, I don’t think so." Lou was stunned, but he did not react. On the way home, he went to a shopping mall to reflect on his condition and his options. Sitting on a bench in an open area of the mall, he just looked at people going by. He said: "I happened to notice that men without hair showed signs of inflammation and constriction on their forehead and scalp. Some men actually had bulges at the back of their head. This was the start of my research! I had to learn how to treat the cause of hair loss, not the symptom."

Lou firmly believed there had to be a way to stimulate hair growth, and to do so, he had to start with the scalp. His persistence in developing a solution for baldness met with success in 1983, and his findings were later supported by research conducted at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and the New York University Medical Center. As reported in the medical journal Cell, these researchers found that the source of new hair cells lay not at the base of the hair, as previously believed, but further up the hair follicle, just below the scalp.

"Our skin is multi-layered, and through mental tension and body stress, we cause the layers of our skin to bond together to the point where our scalp is like a sheet of plastic. The shrinking of the scalp causes delicate new hairs to be cut off and fall out as the pores are closed and the scalp becomes shiny. New delicate hairs are unable to penetrate the surface from underneath, causing the hair follicles to become dormant," says Lou.

After being bald for many years and told by doctors to stop wasting his time and money because he will never be able to grow hair on his head, Lou Gauthier, now totally bald, was not willing to give up yet and continued with his research until he developed his own system for growing new hair. "My technique to grow hair is a hair growth breakthrough based on the reactivation of hair cells just below the scalp. It allows us to directly control our hair restoration. The technique releases the tension between the layers of skin and allows us to maintain this relaxed attitude in our daily life. This is not an overnight miracle cure, but a process that is used to reverse hair loss naturally, without medication or products. It is unique, and unlike medicated remedies, it is a permanent solution", adds Lou.

"Hair loss is not hereditary," according to Lou, and adds, "The stress-related emotions that cause hair loss are hereditary. Hair loss is our body’s way of telling us that we are doing something wrong."

Michael Irwin, M.D. is Norman Cousins Chair for Psychoneuroimmunology at the UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine, and is Director of the Cousins Center forPsychoneuroimmunology at the UCLA Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior. He is also Professor of Psychology at UCLA, Director of the UCLA Training Program in Psychoneuroimmunology and Mental Health, Past-Chair of the UCLA Collaborative Centers for Integrative Medicine, and member of the Advisory Board of the UCLA Center on Aging as well as the UCLA Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center. More recently, Dr. Irwin and his colleagues are studying the reciprocal links between inflammatory cytokines, depression and disordered sleep, with a current focus on rheumatoid arthritis patients in collaboration with Drs. Breen, Cole, Martinez-Maza, and Motivala. His present research program also includes investigations examining the capacity of behavioral interventions to improve insomnia and depressive symptoms in older adults, as mediated by inflammatory mechanisms, in collaboration with Drs. Nicassio, Motivala, and Seeman.

Finally, he has initiated study on the efficacy and cytokine mechanisms that underlie behavioral treatment of fatigue and insomnia in cancer survivors in collaboration with Drs. Bruce H. Hira Ratan Manek (HRM)

Hira Ratan Manek was born on 12th of September 1937 in Bodhavad, India, was raised in Calicut, Kerala, India, where he had his Mechanical Engineering degree from the University of Kerala. After graduation, he joined the family shipping and spice trading business and continued working there until he retired in 1992.After he retired, he began to research and study the ancient practice of sun gazing in which he had been interested in since his childhood. This method was an old but forgotten method, which had been practiced, in the ancient times in many different parts of the world.

After working on this method for 3 years, he was able to re-discover the secrets of sun gazing. During his study, he was mainly inspired from the teachings of Lord Mahavir of Jains, who was also practicing this method two thousand and six hundred years ago. Other inspirations for sungazing came from ancient Egyptians, Greeks, and Native Americans.

Since June 18th, 1995, HRM has and continues to live only on sun energy and water. Occasionally, for hospitality and social purposes, he drinks tea, coffee and buttermilk. Until now, he had three strict fastings, during which he had just sun energy and only water and was under the control and observation of various science and medical teams.

The first of these fasting lasted for 211 days during 1995-96 in Calicut, India directed by Dr. C.K. Ramachandran, a medical expert on allopathy and ayurvedic medicine.

This was followed by a 411 day fast from 2000-2001 in Ahmedabad, India directed by an International team of 21 medical doctors and scientists led by Dr. Sudhir Shah and Dr. K. K. Shah, the acting President of Indian Medical Association at that time. Dr. Maurie D. Pressman, MD also describes his experience with HRM in an article he wrote and later joined the team for the next observation on HRM.

After the excitement of the findings at Ahmadabad, HRM was invited to Thomas Jefferson University and University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia where he underwent a 130 day observation period. This Science/Medical Team wanted to observe and examine his retina, pineal gland and brain, therefore this observation team was led by Dr. Andrew B. Newberg, a leading authority on the brain and also featured in the recent movie What the Bleep Do We Know, and by Dr. George C. Brenard, the leading authority on the pineal gland. Initial results found that the gray cells in HRM's brain are regenerating. 700 photographs have been taken where the neurons were reported to be active and not dying. Furthermore, the pineal gland was expanding and not shrinking which is typically what happens after mid fifties and its maximum average size is about 6 x 6 mm, however for HRM, it has been measured to be at 8 x 11 mm.

There have been many other sungazers who have achieved similar results and have volunteered to be tested, however due to lack of funding and other lifestyle restrictions the results have not been documented. The uniqueness of HRM is that he has surrendered his living body for observation and experiments to the scientific firmament for several extended periods of time. Although scientists and doctors have agreed that hunger is being reduced if not eliminated, due to the complexity of the various brain functions, they have not been able to explain how sungazing has such positive effects on the human mind or body, however more research is underway.

Master Ting Jue Zhou

Master Ting Jue Zhou was born into a family of traditional Chinese medical practitioners in Jiang Su, China in 1934. His uncle, a Taoist priest, taught him the Taoist principles of body cultivation and vital force nourishment. Through practice of these principles he improved his own health. He then went to Wu Dang Mountain, where he studied in seclusion under the head priest for Nei Gong practices, Jiao Hua Wang, learning qigong body cultivation and medical theory.Master Zhou's specialties are in martial arts, qigong and qigong treatment both hard and soft, xinguyi, bagua, taichi, broadsword, spear, sword, and cudgel. His outstanding skills in the latter have been praised highly in the world of martial arts.

His mentors include many famous Chinese qigong masters, who passed on to him their personal knowledge of the mysterious power of qigong and the martial arts. He was invited to be a participant and consultant in several martial arts events and qigong research associations. In 1987 he was selected by Xiao Ping Teng to be a participant in the Shanghi Qigong Science Association and a performer in Guang Zhou and Sheng Zheng. He was also invited to participate in the first annual combat competition in Wu Dang Mountain where he was awarded two certificates. His renowned performance was reported in the several leading Shanghi newspapers. While in Shanghi, he also appeared in several movies.

Master Zhou relocated to the US in 1990. With the help of friends and students, he has established China US Wu Dang Qi Gong Association and two clinics. In the US he has trained many students and has treated people with many different health issues using qigong techniques. His extraordinary work has been reported on 13 US TV networks. His social work has also been recognized and acknowledged by State and County government agencies.
